Day 5 - Corcovado / Christ the Redeemer Statue

Today was our last day in Rio.  For our last day, we prearranged a tour with Rio Hiking to hike Tijuca National Forest and tour Corcovado.  Truthfully, I was a little bit nervous as the last time I talked to them was when they 'accidentally' issued the invoice for twice the amount I had agreed to.  My worries were in vain as the tour guide, Alex was very prompt, spoke fluent English and very knowledgeable about our tour sites. Alex picked up one other person for the tour, Allison, from a nearby hostel and we were on our way to Corcovado.  I was pleasantly surprised that this was a 3-person tour as I was expecting a bus load of other tourists.

We arrived at the Pineiras station for the Corcovado (the mountain Redeemer sits on is called Corcovado, or “Hunchback” in English) tram.  We didn’t take the tram but took a shuttle bus to the summit instead. It is also less than half the price to visit compared to Pao de Acucar at only R$19.60.  After 4 days of seeing very few other tourists, Christ the Redeemer was definitely the most popular attraction in Rio.  The platform around the statue was small compared to the number of tourists visiting at the time.  It was not a perfectly clear day (a bit overcast) when we visited, but we still enjoyed amazing views of Rio from the platform around the statue.

Inside the base of the statue, there is a small chapel for worship.
