Day 4 - Ipanema Hippie Fair Crafts Market

I was very much looking forward to the Ipanema Hippie Fair to purchase more souvenirs and peruse local artwork.  The Ipanema Metro stop was closed, so we decided to take a bus down to the Hippie Fair.  Taking a bus in Rio is cheap and easy.  You don't need exact change or a bus card.  Rio buses have an on-board cashier that will make change for you. The price is one flat rate clearly posted regardless if you are going one stop or 20 stops. Price per person ranges from R$2.75 to R$3.50 depending if your bus is air conditioned or luxury. It worked out well as we did not wait very long for a bus, we had a lovely tour of Rio, and the bus took us directly to the Hippie Fair where we disembarked with other shoppers.

The vendor stalls go all the way around Praça General Osório twice with more art in the center of the square.

I found this adorable Brazilian doll for my friend Linda. (above)

We also found musical instruments for sale.
This is a Kalimba. (right)

We also met a French Brazilian artist that created 3-D art on cedar (wood).

It rained for most of the Hippie Fair; we tried to stay under the vendor tarps as much as possible.  There are a huge variety of items for sale ranging from leather goods (i.e. purses and wallets), art, clothing, toys, jewelry, souvenirs, and food.  Thanks to mobile commerce technology, many vendors take credit cards.
